Race Review - Guardians of the Night 5K-9

This past weekend we ran our 6th race in our "15 in '15" challenge.  We have done 2 previous races in this area before and it isn't far from home.  The event's proceeds went to support the Valparaiso K9 Unit.  The event was a 5K run and a 1 mile dog walk.

This event was special as it was my daughter's first 5K.  She was nervous, and I remember my first and being so nervous, thinking what if I am last or can't finish.  However, she DID finish and she wasn't last!

We got there early as we always do.  It was downtown and they had a couple food vendors and dogs were everywhere!  We recently lost our dog of 9 years a few weeks ago.  So, seeing all the pooches made me want another.....soon, perhaps.  There were many people already there.  We grabbed our bib and packet and mingled around the area.  Not only did my daughter do the race but our buddy, Missy, did as well.

Before the race started, they introduced some of the K9 units and their officers.  They were beautiful dogs.  The Lake County Sheriff's department had a group of bagpipers, (who knew that was even a thing?) dressed in Scottish garb, play Amazing Grace.  The stage was set up for a band to play - Lounge Lizards - and the guitarist played his rendition of the National Anthem.

It was time to line up.  The 5K was started first and the 1 mile dog walk started 15 minutes later.  My daughter was nervous and apprehensive.  I gave her a pep talk and the gun went off.  She stayed with me about half a mile before I broke ahead and weaved my way forward.

One word.....HILLS.

This was the hardest race we have done to date.  The first hill was brutal and was right at the get go.  Then there was another.....and another.....and another.....it got to the point that when we turned a corner, I audible said "Are you kidding me".  Then I thought I probably scarred my daughter for life.  Her first 5K and it was a brutal one.

I leaned at the waist, ran on the balls of my feet, leaned into the hill and pumped up them.  I continued on. Throughout the course, residents came out to cheer the runners on.  The course was well marked and water was at the 1.5 mile mark.  They had people at each mile calling out times - which I liked.  I passed the first mile and my time was 8.30.  Say what?  I have yet to run that fast of a mile!

I passed the 2 mile mark.  I kept pushing and at one point thought - "I will just walk.  Just for a minute.  Just to catch my breath and give my legs a break."  But I knew if I did, that starting to run again would be a problem.  So I ran.  At the 3 mile mark, an officer cheered us on saying only a few more blocks.  I pushed through.

There was an older lady (in her upper 50's) that I tried to at least pace with.  I tried my hardest to catch her.  She was about 20 feet ahead of me the entire race.  Even when she stopped to walk for a minute, I could not seem to catch up to her.  She ended up winning her age group.  Kudos to her!

Finally, the finish line (after another holy hill!).  The clock said 28.15.  Holy crap!  I assumed my time was going to be one of my worst.  The hills were killer and I figured I was slow and not doing well.  However, once I crossed the finish line, I had a personal best of 28.39!  If it wasn't for the hills, I know I could have been under 28 minutes.  Crazzzzzzy!

I have not been able to get to my weight training class lately.  It is available 3 times a week at my gym and I try to go at least twice.  My sister instructs it.  I have to say.....if I had not taken that class, I would never have made it up those hills (not once did I walk...ran the entire time).  That class has strengthened my legs, my quads, my calves and my core.  You never realize how your body has changed and how it has gotten stronger until you do something you never thought you could!

I didn't win a medal.  I came in 6th in my age category.  I will take it.  I may not have placed but I am getting a little faster and in my book, that is a win!

They had a band play and fireworks but we did not stay.  I was exhausted and hungry so we opted to go and grab food.  Overall - nice race, great cause!

Race Review - The Bigglest Loser Walk/Run Series

I hate missing Sunday church but I really wanted to do this race!

Matt worked the night before and I didn't sleep worth a hoot, so between the both of us we were running on low steam.  But that didn't stop us!  We were up early and headed out to Crown Point, Indiana.

The event was at the fairgrounds and packet pick up was easy enough.  We got our bibs and our goody bag and were ready to rock it.  I don't know if I was more excited for the race or to wear my new leggings.  True story.

The race didn't start for another hour so we browsed the booths and I bought some headbands that were guaranteed to "stay put".  I put one on and figured it was as good as any to test it out!

Several past season Biggest Loser contestants were milling around.  Dan and Jackie Evans from Season 5 were our hosts.  Dan sang the National Anthem and did a couple half hour song sets.  He was suprisingly pretty good!

There were over 1000 participants with the half marathon and 5K race combined.  The half marathon runners were released first in 3 waves.  Then 30 minutes after that, the 5K runners were released in waves.  Matt and I were in the first wave.  At the sound of the starting horn, I took off like a mad woman.  I always tell myself to not start out like a bat out of hell but I do anyway.  I was doing pretty good.  My pace was good, breathing wasn't too bad and I kept on trucking.  First mile was a piece of cake.

My second mile was even better, according to my running app.  Halfway through the second mile, JJ O'Malley was there yelling out encouragement and cheering runners on.  Very inspiring!  The third mile, I felt like I hit a wall.  I wanted to push but my legs just wouldn't cooperate.  I was still passing runners but I felt like a turtle trudging through peanut butter.  The hill towards the end was brutal as I bared down and gave the best I could.

At the finish, I pushed through.  Andrea Wilamowski, from season 16, was there yelling out congrats to runners.  We were then given a sweet medal, a banana, a turkey stick, water and an orange.  Score!

I waited for Matt as I horked down my snacks.  He came about ten minutes after me but I am proud of him, nonetheless.

We sat for an hour, enjoying the beautiful weather and looking at what we got in our bag - coupons and samples!

It was such a nice race.  I prefer smaller, home town races however the larger ones have so much energy!  It was such a gorgeous day for it too!  I even braved my self-consciousness and wore a tank top to run in (bat-wing syndrome).

So the review of the Biggest Loser Walk/Run Series:
Terrain - pavement, some gravel and several hills, moderate traffic too
Organization -  well done, race was clearly marked, volunteers directed 5K runners and marathon runners, two water stations even for 5K runners (usually don't have water stations)
Cost - $35 before deadline; got a dry wick shirt, a drawstring bag with a granola bar and samples plus coupons and ads for other 5Ks in the area
Time of Race - 8:00am/marathon; 8:30am/5K
Overall - nice race, not far from home, lots of energy and excitement, music and booths
Award - Plaques for the top 3 winners in each age category,  participation medal for all runners
My Time - 29.30; fastest mile at mile 2 with a 9.02 mile; average pace 9.22m
