Race Review - Rudolph Run 5K

This was our second year running this race.  It is a nice, small town event.

It starts at our local park, goes outside of town and back.  This event also takes place the same day as our church's food pantry and since the packet pick up is at our church, it makes for haphazard parking.  However, we managed to squeeze into a spot and pick up our packet.  We then walked towards the park where the starting line was.  Not only was parking a snafu but walking to the park was as well.  In previous years, they marked a path with lawn candy canes.  This year they did not.  Therefore, people were walking through our Pastor's yard and right next to their house.  While this isn't necessarily a "problem", it did invade their privacy a bit so early in the morning!

Waiting for the start, the announcer gave instruction.  Being close to the front I could barely hear him so I imagine those further back couldn't understand a word.  Ready, set, go!  We were off.  I started at a pretty good pace.  I don't really expect to break any records.  I have been averaging 9.30 min mile or a 5K in just over 30 minutes.  I consider that fantastic...no matter what anyone else thinks.

There were many school kids along the course shouting encouragement, having Christmas music playing in their vehicles, giving out water, etc.  I crossed the finish line strong.

We then had to walk back to the church and wait inside the fellowship hall.  There were donuts, fruit and cookies galore!  Not to mention hot coffee and cocoa!  Yum!  Might as well eat all the calories I burned.

Then we waited.  And waited...and waited.  It wasn't chipped.  The times were done manually.  While I know this takes time, we waited almost an hour for results.  People were leaving, some were grumbling and everyone was impatient.

Results were in....in my age group I got third place.  Last year I got 3rd place as well - with almost the exact same time!

It was a nice, hometown race.  No fancy bells and whistles but the money went to a good cause (a local food pantry and Riley Children's hospital).  This was our last race for 2015!

So, the review of the event Rudolph Run 5K:
Terrain - pavement, strictly road
Organization - Organized fairly well with some minor hiccups
Cost - $20 per person
Time of Race - 8:00am
Overall - pleasant hometown race, nice long sleeved shirt, candy cane, bells for shoes, refreshments afterwards
Award - placement winners got a mug
My Time 30.22
Race # - 20 (22 if you could the trifecta as 3 individual races, which it was...but it was one event)

Bring on 2016!!!

Race Review - Turkey Legs Trifecta

What a rainy, cold day!  This was our first trifecta and our first race that was longer than 3 miles!

A trifecta is 3 races equaling a 15K (just over 9 miles).  After completing each race (4K, 5K, 6K) you get a medal then all 3 pieces of the medal fit together like a puzzle to create one large medal.

So we drove a little over an hour and I didn't even want to get out it was so cold.  I am not sure it was THAT cold....but the rain and the wet air made it feel that much colder.

We met up with our running group (Corn Fed Spartans - look them up on FB).  I was thankful they had a tent to keep the mist off us.  The first race started shortly after we got there.  All the races were trail runs...our first of that too.  The first 2 miles was a breeze.  I could go all day long it felt like.  I finished and was feeling good.  I quickly grew frigid once my body cooled down.  I had 3 layers on but it didn't seem to help.  I was thankful I decided to wear my mud shoes!  The trails were slippery and muddy!  Many people made the same rookie mistake we did awhile back - tennis shoes.  They hold no traction whatsoever!

The second race was a 5K (3.1 miles).  This mostly in the woods with some grass terrain and pavement.  I felt good on that one too...and we saw a deer!  Pretty neat.

Finished that and had a snack thanks to the members of Corn Fed - haha!  And again, started getting frozen.  Next up was the 4 miles.  This made me nervous.  I have ran 6 miles before but not often.  I just took off and did the best I could which was pretty good.  This was all trails and the first hill was brutal!!!   The only bothersome thing was how congested it was.  The trails were often impassable, meaning you had to go single file.  For the first quarter mile or so, there were many times I had to walk because the person in front of me was walking and there was no way I could pass unless I wanted to tumble down the hill.

Regardless, I came to the conclusion that I really enjoy trail runs...probably more so than pavement events.  I am unsure why.  Probably because there is no need for speed.  You can go at a nice jog pace and the scenery is nice too.

I definitely would do it again.

So, the review of the event Turkey Leg Trifecta:
Terrain - trails - hilly, muddy, uneven
Organization - Organized fairly well
Cost - $50 per person
Time of Race - first wave was at 10am
Overall - very good...I really enjoyed it
Award - free beer (gave mine away), turkey dogs and 3 medals
My Time -1 hour 40 minutes for all 3 races combined
Race # - 19 (21 if you count each race individually) for the year

Race Review - Turkey Trot 5K

I have the trots....the Turkey Trots that is.  Hehe.

This was the very first 5K I had done.  We did it last year so it marking our 1 year "runnerversity" made it special.

It was a typical hometown race.  It seemed smaller in attendance compared to last year.  We arrived and got our packets.  This year we had the option to get a shirt or a headband which was nice.  I have enough race shirts to carpet my house.

This year they had a Piyo instructor getting everyone warmed up.  God bless her.....there were very few people interested.  However, that didn't stop her!

It was then time to run.  The course was familiar and I found that I liked that.  I knew, in comparison to where I was, how much further I had to go. The first little bit was a breeze.  I always start out fast no matter how much I try not to.  I just figure get my speed work out of the way then take it nice and easy towards the end.  Well, once we turned that first corner, we were heading into a nasty wind.  I felt like I was pushing and running as hard as I could but going nowhere.  It was horrible.  It definitely wore me out.

They handed out bottled waters along the course.  While this was thoughtful, I prefer a paper cup.  Just down it and toss it (or hang onto it or shove it in your pocket).  With the bottled water, I had to carry the darned thing the entire race.  I kept looking for a trash can alongside the route, no such luck.

Overall it was a decent race.  It was timed but not chipped.  It was the old school stop watch.  I have no idea what my time was.  They haven't emailed them yet.  I figure it wasn't my fastest so right around my average of 30 minutes.  I will update once I get the official time.

Then afterwards, I ate the calories I burned in turkey and potatoes!  :)

So, the review of the event Turkey Trot 5K:
Terrain - pretty flat, cement, through town
Organization - Organized fairly well, money went to a local person dealing with cancer
Cost - $20 per person
Time of Race - 9:00am
Overall - Good hometown race
Award - didn't stick around to see if there were placement awards, participants had the choice of a teeshirt or headband (there were no extra however so you were outta luck!), banana and water after
My Time -unsure
Race # - 18 for the year

Nutrition Tuesday - Pets need good eats too!

Sometimes we like to spoil our pets, especially our dogs.  We have a 7 month old Schnauzer.  He is a handful.  I had noticed his breath was....less than fresh.  So I bought over the counter dog treats.  Good grief!  They were expensive for small treats that didn't really make his breath as minty fresh as they promised.  Then I did my research to find that Schnauzers are notorious for having tummy troubles and for being overweight.

The search began.  I researched and trialed.  I found a recipe that he loved!  The ingredients were simple, they were easy to make and he loved them.  Not only that but his breath was fresher, his tummy was happy and they were cheaper!

The base for the treats is the following:

Wheat flour (can use rice flour or oats if your pooch has a wheat allergy, thankfully mine doesn't!)
Honey
Egg
Water
Parsley
Mint

The above is the base for fresh breath treats.  While these are delicious for him, you can add to it.

It was then that I realized that I am sure other people would love to have healthy treats for their fur baby.  This birthed "Sherlock Snacks".  A variety of healthy dog treats that your pet will be sure to love!  Not only that, but proceeds go towards missions.  It is in the birthing stages and will soon be launched on Facebook - so keep an eye out!

Health is not just for people....pets can get overweight which can cause health problems.  Ensuring they get the proper nutrition and serving amounts can create a long life for your pooch.

Enjoy!

Race Review - Halloween 5K Brew HaHa

There are so many Halloween races!  It is hard to pick just one.  We decided to go with this one because of the group we belong to (Cornfed Spartans) were doing it.

It wasn't too far from home - a little over an hour.

It was early....and cold!  This was another race that was fun.  Who doesn't like to dress up?  We arrived and got our packets.  I like the shirts.  I have enough race shirts to choke a horse.  But I like them!  I wear them to the gym and when I run.  Anyway, we hung around for a little bit until the race started.  They had a photo area to get your picture taken - which we did but they didn't post them.  Boo!  They had a costume contest, a free beer after the run as well as a free donut.  They had some free popcorn and free coffee or hot chocolate.  It was a nice area.

The race started and it was a slow start.  There were around 550 attendees and we were at the back of the pack.  So starting out was slowwww.  I finally found an opening and took it.  Matt and I dressed as a TMNT and pizza while our friend dressed as Waldo.  I ran the course which was fairly flat with a few hills but nothing overwhelming.  It went through town a bit then back around.

At the end of the race, there was a photographer and a medal waiting as well as a yummy donut.  The race was very well done with a few hiccups.

A couple of complaints that I see at a lot of races.....after about the 35 minute mark, the photographer wanders off.  Therefore, not everyone gets a finish photo which I don't think is very fair.  Also, about that time, people trickle off and there is no one at the finish line.  It is exhilarating to cross the line and have people cheer and clap.  However, by about 35 minutes, people cross the line to nothing.  No clapping, no cheering.  They don't deserve it any less that the person that crosses first.  The tortoise and the hare both cross the finish.  I try to stay and clap and cheer as I wait on Matt.

Also, they ran out of donuts.  They had 700 and there were only 550 runners.  So runners were taking more than one. I feel they should have had someone monitoring that or handing them out.  They did have more delivered, which was cool because most races wouldn't do that.  Once they are gone, they would be gone.  However, it was great to cross the line, have your pic taken, grab your medal and your donut and enjoy your runner's high.........but a lot of people didn't get that.   I don't know....just doesn't seem fair.

Overall though, it was a fun race.

So, the review of the event Halloween Brew HaHa 5K:
Terrain - pretty flat, cement, through town
Organization - Organized fairly well, police were along the course, water station
Cost - $38 per person
Time of Race - 9:30am
Overall - very good....they did their best to get it to run smoothly and efficiently
Award - free beer, coffee or hot choc, free popcorn, teeshirt and a medal
My Time - 31.14
Race # - 17 for the year

Race Review - Zombie Run

Yes, we drove 10 hours to do a zombie run.  What of it?

We actually decided to make a vacation out of it.  We did a few escape rooms (check them out! so fun!), visited Matt's sister, visited some filming sites of the Walking Dead and then stopped in Tennessee on the way home and walked some trails.

However, the main attraction was the Zombie Run.  We have done this type of run before but we have always been the zombies.

The premise of the race is the runners get a belt with 3 flags. The runners then go through the course while "zombies" try to take your flags.  Once all your flags are gone, you are "infected".

We arrived and the parking lot was already pretty full.  We parked and took a bus to the location.  The location of the event was an actual training facility.  They use it to train military, emergency rescue, EMTs, ect.  It was pretty cool.  It had buildings on fire, a subway station, crushed cars, helicopters flying and even a flooded neighborhood.  It was intense.

We got our packet and since we instagramed, we got an extra flag - score!  We hung around, checked out the vendors and admired some of the people that had some pretty amazing makeup on.

So they gave us some pointers and off we went.  It was kind of scary at first because you didn't know what to expect.  Right off the get go there were zombies everywhere!  We raced through a building area and escaped the zombie clutches.  Some of them were slow, some were fast, some were funny, and some were downright scary!

We then headed out onto the open highway to get away from the infected.  There were broken down cars and buses all along the course and...you guessed it....more zombies!

I did fairly well until I was face to face with a little girl zombie.  She blocked my way, shoulder checked me and took my danged flag.

So, down to 3.  We then had a stretch that had no zombies or anything.  That part was kind of lame because it was just open road that we walked.  There was some "gun fire" in the distance but other than that pretty uneventful.

We then headed into the buildings area.  We ran into a facility and Matt ran right into a wall.  I heard him and heard the zombie ask if he was okay (before he snatched his flag -dirty!).  Matt came stumbling out - apparently, in the dark room and with zombies chasing, he didn't see the wall.  I asked him if he was okay.....then asked again...when he didn't answer, I took off.  It is the apocalypse after all!  Every man for himself!  Don't worry, he caught up to me (2 weeks later and he STILL has a large nasty bruise!!!).

We then entered the subway tunnel.  This part was neat but it would have been better if they actually had zombies in this area.  The only thing weird was they had people playing music along the way like violin, banjos, etc.  Ambiance, maybe?  Odd.

Then this kid came from nowhere and we "danced" as he tried to take my flag by I made it unscathed.  We then headed to the flood area.  I decided not to go into the water (it was an option) only because it was muddy and I was afraid of what was in there.  As I came out of the side, a "zombie" told me to be careful because people were slipping on the mud and falling.  I told him thank you and he was like - you are welcome.  He was such a nice zombie!  He then reached out to snatch my flag but I was quicker and snatch my hand over it.  I then proceeded to tell him there was no way he was going to be all nicey to me and take my flag.  We argued back and forth and I said forget it!  And was off.   A few more buildings then at the end was some weird family of zombie Smurfs. I kid you not.

And we got our medal and our shirt.

It was super fun.  We plan to go back next year and run it again and be zombies too.  It was the best zombie course we have seen.  We enjoyed a snow cone and headed back to the bus.

So, the review of the event Zombie Run 5K:
Terrain - buildings, water, gravel, concrete, grass.....all sorts of terrain
Organization - Was well organized.  Everything clearly marked and ran smoothly
Cost - $50 per person
Time of Race - 9:30am
Overall - was so much fun and unique!  Fantastic course and props
Award - medal (infected or survivor) and a teeshirt
My Time - it was timed but we did it for fun, no idea what my time was
Race # - 16 for the year

Nutrition Saturday - Deliciousness

So, I was off work today and didn't really have any pressing plans until later.  As I scrolled through social media, I saw post after post of people who ran events today.  Made me think why I wasn't out there running one?  Hashtag slacker.

Therefore, I went grocery shopping.  I know!  I got a little wild!

I decided to buy ingredients to make some cupcakes that I had saved.  Let's face it, most of us screenshot and save recipes but do we ever truly make them?  I honestly try to.  And if I can find a healthy alternative to something, I will give it a try!

This is a cupcake that is 150 calories a cupcake (they are big!) and only two ingredients.  That's right ladies and gents....you heard me....TWO ingredients.

Let's get started.

First gather all  your ingredients *chuckle chuckle*

I wasn't kidding.  That's it.  Make sure you get the "moist" cake mix and the 15 oz can of pumpkin.   Cost of ingredients = $2.93.

Dump the mix into a bowl then add the pumpkin.  Mix it well.  The batter will be super thick - that is what it is suppose to look like.  Mix it until all the cake mix is combined with the pumpkin.

Place 12 cupcake liners in a muffin tin then add the batter, dispersing it between the 12 liners.  You can be generous.  Fill those suckers all the way up!

Preheat your oven to 400F.....hmmm, probably should have told you to do that first.

Place cupcakes in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.  I baked mine for 15 minutes and checked them and gave them just a minute or so more.  When a toothpick comes out clean, they are done.

Here they are in all their delicious glory.  Don't like pumpkin?  Honestly, you cannot even taste it.  Pumpkin isn't my favorite but there is no trace of pumpkin taste in these cupcakes.  They are super moist and so yummy.  The best part?  They are only 150 calories for one!  That is less than a granola or protein bar.

A typical cupcake is 300+ calories.  This one is half that!  So have 2!

Happy eating!

Race Review - Extra Mile 5k

My pal and I did a local 5k this past weekend.  It went for a good cause - to supply cancer patients with gas cards to help with travel expenses to doctor visits and so forth.

I love small races.  I am not sure why but they are always my favorite.  They are intimate, quiet and just all around good races.

This one had some "disappointments", however.

It started immediately.  We went to get our packets and my name wasn't on the list.  My husband mailed it a month prior.  I told them this and they asked if the check cleared and if I was sure.  I was sure.  I called my husband just to make sure and he confirmed, yes he did mail it and yes, it had cleared.  I told them this.  They handed me a registration to fill out.  They wanted me to re-register and pay the fee again.  While, yes, it went to a great cause, I was not about to pay a fee again.  Then when asked what size shirt I wore (medium), they said they didn't have any more mediums and I would have to take a large.  This isn't the first time a race didn't have my shirt. I don't understand when I pay for a specific shirt size, shouldn't I get it?  Well, they didn't have my registration is why.  Finally, as I started to fill out the paper - lo and behold they found my registration.  It was overlooked.  But....I still didn't get a packet or correct shirt size.  Whatever.

We waited the 30 minutes before the race started and when they said to line up, my pal and I made our way over to the start.  The start was very unclear on which direction we were suppose to go.  Therefore, everyone just sort of stood around not knowing which way to face.

It was a gun start and the gentleman with the gun made his way over.  We overheard a lady jokingly ask him - "Are there any bullets in that gun?"  His reply?  "I don't know, let's find out."  He then held the starter gun to his temple.  I was moritified.  At the rate of suicide in our nation and the fact that small children were around.....I was so angry.

At the gun shot, we took off.  We had to run up a grassy hill and run down an area where railroad tracks used to be.  Odd.  We then came out on a road and ran the course which conisisted of around a walking park, through alleys behind people's homes and through the town.  The course wasn't marked that well - cones with construction paper arrows.

I just ran.  They had one water station that I opted to forgo.  I actually felt pretty good.  When I saw mile 1, I was surprised at how good my breathing was and how my legs felt.

The finish line was not clearly marked.  It was timed but by a person writing down our bib numbers and marking our times.  I use an app on my phone while I run.  I hope to get a Garmin soon.  It would make it so much easier.

They had water, bananas and granola bars.  However, it felt like if they didn't know you (small town race), that you were ignored.  Thanks, guys.

After my pal crossed the line, we left.

Overall, I ran the 5K......but not the best experience.  It did however, help me reach my goal of 15 - 5Ks in 2015!!!!

So, the review of the event Extra Mile 5K:
Terrain - grassy, hilly, pavement, race was 3.3, not 3.1
Organization - Not well at all, course not clearly marked, no volunteers on course, other volunteers didn't seem to know what they were doing
Cost - $20 per person - went to a good cause
Time of Race - 8:30am
Overall - not a good experience, probably wouldn't do a race in that town again
Award - none
My Time - unofficial time (haven't gotten time yet) - 32min for 3.3
Race # in our 15 in '15 Challenge - 15/15 --- YAHOOO

Race Review - Blacklight Run

We did another fun run.  I am not fan of "fun runs".  They are nice to just walk and chitchat but I could not do another one and be okay.

This one was at the same place we did the Glow Run last August.  In fact, it was set up identical.  The only difference was it was glow powder and not glow foam.

Not much to really say other than it was slightly disappointing.  The before party was loud and hard to understand.  If you weren't up close to the stage you didn't get any powder or glowsticks that were tossed out.  At the Glow Run, we were coated by cannons with foam....here you either had to buy a packet of powder and toss it on yourself or hope you get some dusting from someone tossing it around near you.

We headed to the start and it was like driving cattle.  There we so many people there.  Finally it was our turn to head out on the course.  The first mile was just weaving around cones on the track.  It felt like an amusement park line.

There were several blacklight stations where you could snap a picture if you wanted (no powder).  Then we got to the first powder station and the people tossing it barely tossed any.  I think one of my shoulders got a slight speckling of dust.  Yahoo.

The next station was the same and we just opted to scoop it up off the ground and toss it on each other.  Same with the next one.

At the end, we were suppose to get a free packet of powder.  They had one tent handing them out and the line was so long we opted to just head out.

We didn't stay for the after party (we were cold and hungry).

Again, these kind of runs aren't my favorite but they are fun to do with a group to just go and have a good time with one another.

So, the review of the event Blacklight Run 5K:
Terrain - through the fairgrounds so mostly  paved, some dirt
Organization - It was organized as well as can be expected
Cost - $20
Time of Race - started at 8:30 but people were dismissed in waves
Overall - Typical fun run, not impressed
Award - packet of powder
My Time - not times

Race Review - Muddy Fanatic

I am not a morning person.  Period.  So when we had to get up at 5:30 am for this race, I wasn't all too thrilled.  The drive was almost 3 hours.  While I tried my hardest to stay awake, I ended up falling asleep a little over an hour into the drive.  I woke up to almost being there.  Score!

Matt joined a group awhile back called the Corn Fed Spartans.  They are a group that do mostly obstacle course races (ocr for short).  Matt likes being part of the group so we ordered jerseys and this was the first race we got to wear them.  We felt pretty hard core....at least I did.

Once we got there, we quickly realized this mud run was not near as large as our last one.  It was small and not as crowded.  We had to pay $10 for parking but the money went to SON foundation - an organization that houses cancer families as they are getting treatment.  Fantastic!

We got our packet which included a shirt, bib and bracelet.  Then we met up with our group.  It felt good to be welcomed so warmly; like old friends.  Our race was scheduled for the 10am heat but we opted to just jump into the 9:40am one.  At the "go" we were off!  We jogged a bit then walked.  In fact, the group stayed together the entire time and walked the course and enjoyed it.  While, at times, I grew frustrated because I am competitive by nature and many people were flying past us....I had to remember I wasn't running this for time, even though it WAS timed.  I was doing it to enjoy it.

In fact, I enjoyed this mud race better than the last, even though I skipped a couple obstacles.  There were two that I felt were unsafe for my physical capabilities and then one that I knew I just couldn't do, YET.  I wasn't going to be a beast and hurt myself trying to prove something.  No shame in going around it.

There were walls, tires, a tire wall, cargo nets, mud crawls under barbed wire, mud pits, water pits, monkey bars, balance beams, etc.  With the group we were in, everyone helped everyone.  It was great.

Matt had bought himself a pair of mud shoes and surprised me with a pair just a few days ago.  Let me tell you - they make a world of difference!  Last mud run we had no idea what to expect and had just old tennis shoes.  The difference between the mud shoes and tennis shoes is crazy!  The mud shoes grip the ground and have slip resistance.  They were fantastic!  Live and learn.  Just like by the time the next one rolls around, I will have arm sleeves.  Army crawling through tubes, dirt and mud made for some raw and sore elbows!

Overall it was a lot of fun!  Definitely recommend it!

At the finish, everyone got a medal which was in plastic.  It is the little things.  Last mud run they put them around our necks and I was thinking - this is going to get nasty.  So having them in plastic was definitely thoughtful.  We also got ham sandwiches, bottled water, bananas and chips afterwards.  The rinsing off station was powerful spray hoses - again, fantastic!  Last mud run it was barely a trickle.  They also had private changing stalls.

So, the review of the event Muddy Fanatic 5K:
Terrain - rough, muddy, grassy, hilly, obstacles
Organization - It was organized very well!  Volunteers throughout the course.
Cost - $35 per person (sale price), received a teeshirt, food and a kickin' medal
Time of Race - varied, depending on your wave time
Overall - Enjoyed it and would highly recommend it
Award - large medal
My Time - 2 hours and 30 minutes - didn't run it for a record time.  :)

Nutrition Saturday - Peanut Butter & Co

I haven't done a nutrition post in awhile.  I have been pretty busy lately with many different things pulling me in several different directions.  My diet and workout regime has suffered because of it....but I am getting back on track!

I am not a fan of peanut butter.  I can eat it once in awhile but it certainly isn't my "go to" snack choice.  Peanut butter has a lot of health benefits, most nut butters do.  However, I can't justify the amount of calories for the consumption when I don't care for it all that much.

With that being said, I have discovered a gem of an item called Peanut Butter & Co.  It is peanut butter blended with dark chocolate.  The beauty part is it is all natural.

No trans fats
No cholesterol
No hydrogenated oil
No high fructose corn syrup

The ingredients are easy to pronounce and pretty straight forward - peanuts, dried cane syrup, cocoa, cocoa butter, palm fruit oil, vanilla, lecithin and salt.

The calories are 170 for 2 tablespoons and with 6g of protein it makes a great choice for your protein intake.  Protein takes longer to digest therefore leaves you feeling full longer.  Score!

I found this at the local Walmart where all the other nut butters and jellies are.  Cost is about $4-$5 for a small jar.  The jar I bought lasted me quite a while though.  I would spread it on whole wheat toast and slice a banana on top.....my idea of heaven in a healthy snack (or for breakfast!).

Well worth the price.

Enjoy!

Race Review - Foam Glow 5K

This was another fun run.  No time, your pace to just enjoy.  My husband and I went with our friend and our son and his girlfriend joined us - their first 5k!

Parking was easy enough.  Once we got parked, however, finding where to go was a little disorientating.  We asked someone and headed for packet pickup.  Since we had over an hour drive, we had to pick up our packets the night of.  The event charged $5 just to pick the packet up.  Which I think it is just another money maker for them but whatever.  We got our packets and headed back to the van to drop the bag off and change into our white tees.

I had to use the restroom - disgusting.  No toilet paper in several stalls, a couple stalls were overflowing, debris and water everywhere on the floor.  It was that or the port-a-pot so I just quickly did my business and washed my hands thoroughly (and air dried due to no paper towel).

We headed back to the event.  There were several places to buy food, beer and glow in the dark items.  We headed to the staged area.  The music was pumping  and they had 4 cannons shooting this bubble colored foam.  It was pretty cool.  Then we went to line up to start.  They let the people go in waves.  There were THOUSANDS of people there.  Luckily we were pretty early in the line but still waited 30 minutes or so before we were allowed to go.

The first part of the race was boring.  It was at a fairgrounds so they had the first area marked off with cones and tape.  It was just a zig-zag pattern, like an amusement park line.  Some people ran, most walked.  There was no foam.  There were several black light stations that showed the foams colors.  It kept going....and going.  I overheard others say what we were thinking - where was the foam???

Finally, one foam station - probably a mile into the event....it had two cannons and was a let down.  So we kept going and it weaved throughout the fairgrounds so most of the route was under lights (defeating the blacklight/glow in the dark experience), past horse stalls that smelled "delightful" and next to the highway.

We came to the next foam station and it had one cannon and the other was just colored water sprayed on us that was sticky and smelled horrible.

Continuing on, there was a water station with mini waters.   Then we hit the last foam station that had two cannons and quite a bit of foam.  Then it was the end.

There was an after party but none of us drink and we didn't want to wait for it to start.  Besides we were all starving (hit up Denny's afterwards!).  Overall - not impressed.

Race Review - Matrix Superhero 5K

We haven't ran a timed race since July 4th.  I have had some health issues so I slacked with my running.  I have gotten back into it but not nearly as devoted as I was prior.  That is going to change!  I am going to get back on a schedule because today sucked (for me, anyway).

Today we ran a somewhat local race, 30 minutes from our home.  It was for a fantastic cause that we are passionate about - pro-life.  The organization is called Matrix Pregnancy Resource - they counsel women and men who seem to have nowhere else to go.  They offer wellness exams, prenatal/parenting classes, emergency baby supplies, after abortion relief (however they do not promote abortion - there are merely there offer counseling if someone makes that decision elsewhere), pregnancy testing, pregnancy choice options, STD testing, ultrasounds, and more...all FREE to whomever is in need.

This was a super hero run however, we didn't dress up.  I did wear my batman shirt though - represent!  They had a kid fun run, pancake breakfast, live DJ and a goodie bag with a shirt, water bottle and snacks.

We easily got our bib and packet and hung around waiting for the event to start.  There were many people there supporting the great cause.  90% were representing their favorite super hero.  There were babies, kids of all ages, dogs and adults varying in age and body size.  It was fantastic.

After an opening prayer, they judged costumes.  There weren't too many but the one that took first (and should have) was a family.  The pregnant mom was Baymax and the rest of the family was dressed as Big Hero 6, all homemade.  Amazing what some colored duct tape and talent can do!  Loved it!

Then it was time.  The walkers lined up and had a separate 2 mile course and the runners had the 3.1  miles.  At the "go", we took off.  It was at a local park/community zoo.  We had to do 3 laps to equal our distance.  I felt pretty good at mile one.  I was trucking along.  They had many volunteers, many kids, cheering us on and handing out water.  It was great.  I rounded one "lap" and started slowing down.  My legs were on fire, my breathing was sparatic and at times I thought I should just quit.  But I didn't.  I stopped for a few seconds to get a drink a couple times but then went back at it.  Finally, the last lap.  I was in the home stretch!  I finally crossed the finish line and thought I was gonna pass out - haha...no, really.  I sat in the grass and drank my water as I waited for Matt who came across 6 minutes later than I.

They handed out medals to the top finishers, courtesy of Medal Mouth.

So, the review of the event Matrix Superhero 5K:
Terrain - flat pavement, off road throughout a small park

Race Review - Mudathlon

Ok, I was definitely nervous about this one.  I am not even sure why.  I was afraid that I couldn't complete the obstacles, that I would fall on my face or that I would look like a fool.  I still have the mentality of being that frumpy big girl that struggles to do anything.

We got there easy enough.  This was like our 3rd or 4th run in this town.  This race was out in the country.  Parking was in a large grassy area and then we had to walk about a mile to the event.  With the crazy...CRAZY amount of rain we have had this summer, the walk alone was a challenge.  It was muddy and slippery but it set the tone for the event.

Once we got there, we had to trudge through more mud and made our way to pick up our packet.  It had our bib, pins, our tracking chip and our shirts.  We dropped them off at bag check and walked around, checking things out.

My husband joined a group called Corn Fed Spartans awhile back.  It is a running group that is in the upper Midwest area.  I joined as well but I am not as much of a follower as he is.  Come to find out a group of them were there so we did introductions and immediately felt welcomed.

Our wave was at 9:45.  At the gun shot, we were off.  The Mudathlon was a 5K course filled with lots of mud and between 30-40 obstacles including pipe crawls, wading through water and mud, monkey bars, rope climbs, hay jumps, walls and many other obstacles ending with a slide into a pit of water....did I mention MUD?

At the start, I stayed with Matt.  I remember giving him a high five after the first and second obstacle (he fell right at the first obstacle - I thought it was funny, not sure he did).  The third obstacle, a wall, I remember looking behind me and seeing him and then I trotted off.  Once I got to the tires, I looked back and didn't see him.  So I waited a bit.  Still no Matt.  So I opted to just continue on.  I was by myself most of the first half.  I was surprised at how effortlessly I could do the obstacles.  I surprised myself!  Right before the second mile, the group of Corn Fed Spartans caught up with me and I hung out with them the remainder of the race.  I did well and finished all the obstacles except the hay bales.

I was determined to get over that hay bale.  I knew I could do it...so I ran and tried to hoist myself up.  I know I looked ridiculous and hit it like a bird hitting a house window.  One gentleman just grabbed me and threw me over it.  That was the only one that gave me problems (and there were 3 of them...the guy threw me over each one!).

Still no Matt.

After the slide, we had to walk through muck to the finish line.  I felt like Atreyu in The Neverending Story.  It was when my leg hit a spot and disappeared to the hip that I panicked slightly. I couldn't get it out and it felt like it was in quicksand.  After struggling, it pulled free only to do it again.  I am pretty sure I whimpered "I can't get my leg out".   I felt like I was going to need a search and rescue!

I got it out and finished.  They had small wet nap things - just enough to wipe your eyes, water and Gatorade and a finishing medal.

I waited another 15 minutes until I saw Matt struggling to the finish line.  He finished but he wasn't doing well.  The heat really got to him and he struggled every since mile 2, he said.  I felt horrible that I had left him but I didn't do it intentionally.  I really enjoyed the race but his experience wasn't as enjoyable.

We got a ticket for a free drink so we got some Gatorade and we had a ticket for a free piece of pizza.  We bought tickets to get more pizza.  I am not ashamed to say I ate 4 pieces and could have eaten the other 2 that Matt couldn't eat.  I am always starving after a race.....and pizza is my favorite.

We walked back to the car after Matt felt better.  The event had PVC pipes that were make shift showers so we showered off fairly good and by the time we got to the van, we were dry.  We changed our clothes in the van so we weren't too messy on the drive home - just barefoot.  We both forgot a change of shoes and we left ours there because there was no salvaging.

I was SO sore afterwards but it was SO worth it.  I was hoping for some gnarly battle wounds but all I got was a scratched up knee from the cargo net and some pretty cool bruises.

All in all - my favorite race to date!   I really enjoyed it and plan to do it again next year!

So the review of the event Mudathlon 5K:
Terrain - muddy, trails, water, obstacles, event, slippery, climbing up and down
Organization - It was well organized and results/pictures were posted quickly
Cost - $65 per person, received a teeshirt, free drink and free pizza
Time of Race - 9:45am (was our wave....they had waves every 15 minutes)
Overall - My favorite race so far!
Award - Not sure if there was a placement award but all participants got a medal
My Time - 1 hour and 36 minutes (could have gotten a better time but was in it for the fun, not the time)

Race Review - 4th of July

Okay, Okay....this blog is 2 weeks late.  A lot has been going on and time keeps slipping away from me.  But better late than never, eh?

This was a local 5K - right in our own hometown.  It was weird to walk up to the starting point and then walk home afterwards.

We live in a dinky, small town so attendance was low for the race.  It was a walk/run as well as a biathalon.  Kudos to those atheletes!

Anyway, we got there with plenty of time to spare and grabbed our race packet.  Race time was 8:30a.m.  However, they were running behind and seemed to have some malfunction with the rime clock.  I grew anxious only because I had to go to work afterwards.  Therefore, running late made me nervous about finishing in time to get home to get ready.  15 minutes later and the race was ready to start.

It was hard for me.  As I mentioned, days seem to slip away and my training has suffered.  So this race was like I had never ran before - ha!  I had to push through and there were several locals who came out to cheer the runners on.  That always makes me feel like a rockstar!

I finished with a slower time than usual but that is okay with me.  At the end, they had fruit, gatorade and pretzels.  Also, they had cold, wet rags for us to wipe our faces and put on our necks.  That was a first!  It felt fantastic.

All in all, not much to blog about.  Typical small town race.  No bells or whistles.

So the review of the event 4th of July 5K:
Terrain - all open paved (meaning some traffic)
Organization - it was "okay", mostly school kids as volunteers which means some just goofed off, race started about 20 minutes late, finish line inflatable fell over, had a few technical difficulties
Cost - $25 per person, received a teeshirt, some coupons and a drawstring bag
Time of Race - 8:30am
Overall - Typical small town race
Award - Not sure, since it started late and I had to work, we didn't stick around
My Time - 30.14 (came in 5th)
Race # in our 15 in '15 Challenge - 9/15

Race Review - Color in Motion 5K

Life is meant to be lived!  This race was a fun, not timed event.  Sometimes you just gotta have fun!

It was EARLY.....holy cow!  I am not a morning person, but we had to get up and be out the door by 6am.  We stopped by to pick up my daughter's fiance and we were off.  The event was in Chicago so there were THOUSANDS of people.

Once we got there, we had to park about a mile away and walk to the event.  It was a pleasant walk along the wharf and water.   It was kind of hard to find but once it was in view, there were flags everywhere.  Since we were there fairly early, wait was minimal.  We picked up our bag with our shirt, powder packet and temporary tattoos.  We took a look at the merchandise table.  Everything was reasonably priced but we opted to just buy some extra powder.  That was an ordeal.  Apparently, someone took off with their WiFi hot spot box (intentional or not, I am unsure).  Therefore, they couldn't connect to the internet to run our (or anyone else's) credit card.  We waited for some time.  While they had plenty of volunteers, they seemed to be clueless.

We had to wait an hour or so, therefore we sat and watched the beach and water.  There was a DJ making announcements.  We soon headed towards the start.  They let groups go in waves.  That made it nice.  We were crammed like sardines but at least we didn't have to fight through to move.  We were about the third group to go.  Showered with powder, we were off.

This event is a fun, family event.  It is not timed nor is it expected to be a "competition".  Therefore, I was perplexed as people ran past me.  I even had a lady that yelled over and over "on your left" as she trotted past us - a runner's exclamation that one makes while passing someone in a race.  I yelled back that we heard her.....and I thought I was going to have to throw down by the look she gave me.  Some people.....

We made our way through the color stations - yellow started us, then blue, pink, green and orange.  It was a lot of fun.  While we walked, I have to admit that it took everything in my power not to be one of those fools running.  I wanted to just take off and run.  It was a race, afterall.  Races meant running, right?

It seriously seemed like this event was 10 miles long.  I kept thinking that it was the longest 3 miles ever.  When I mentioned that to my husband, he said - you are used to doing 3 miles in 30 minutes.....of course walking is going to make it seem longer.

Finally, we reached the finish (and they were still releasing waves at the starting line!).  We got a water.  The volunteers handing out the waters were rude.  They were getting irritated with the participants because they weren't taking the water.  One volunteer said - "Just take the water!  Stop waiting for us to hand it to you!"  Rudeness!

The DJ was thumping and there were soooo many people.  I couldn't stand it, honestly.  Besides, I was starving.  So we left.

It was fun.  I went in with no real expectations except to come out colorful!

So the review of the event Color in Motion 5K in Chicago:
Terrain - some paved, some gravel, some mud - it weaved through a park area
Organization - it was as good as could be expected
Cost - $20 per person, received a packet of powder and a tshirt and temporary tattoos
Time of Race - 9:00am
Overall - I didn't expect much going in.  It was fun.
Award - none - it was not a competitive event
My Time - I didn't bother timing myself since I walked the entire race

Vacation......*insert melodramatic music here*

I went on vacation with my family this past two weeks.  We headed to Florida and even though my kids are both adults, we went to Walt Disney World.  It was a pretty good time, all in all.

Before I went, I had these ideas of grandeur.  I was going to use the resort gym, I was gonna try to run at least 3 times a week and I was going to make good choices with what I ate.  We even had a 5K we signed up for.  Yep, I was going to make sure I stuck to my plan.

Yeah, right.

While the idea seemed like a good one, it never reached fruition.  I used the gym one time.  I ran outside once and it was HORRIBLE.  My poor Indiana body wasn't used to that kind of heat and all around stickiness.  We did our 5K....that is a separate post all together.  And the food.....we won't even discuss that.

Everything I knew, everything I learned....went down the crapper.  I felt horrible, and my body started to protest with bloating and nausea and fatigue.  I don't know why I put myself through that torture!  But the popcorn, caramel apples, ice cream, burgers, fries......oh my!

So, I told my husband I was going to detox a few days before I weighed myself because I was scared to see what the number was.  Well, my curiosity got the better of me.  I weighed myself this morning.

8 pounds gained.

No joke.  Being transparent here....8 lousy pounds.  Ugh.  That may not seem like a lot to most of you but to me, it scares me to death.  I refuse to return to where I was over a year ago - 250 pounds, miserable and just existing.

Granted, the 8 pounds wasn't as bad as I was expecting but a small 5 pounds would have been a better number to swallow.

However, I had a fantastic vacation.  I feel refreshed and made some great memories with my kids.  I am glad to be home (too much of a good thing was making everyone irritable) and I am even more glad to get back to my routine.

Give me a week and that 8lbs will be gone.  I am starting a strict regimen tomorrow.  I have to detox this garbage out.  Then I will be doing 90% clean eating (loosely following the 21 day fix).  I still am shooting for losing 10 more pounds (after losing the initial 8 lbs I gained) so I can say 100 lbs down.

This post was to show we all have those days.  In my case weeks, haha.  We trip up, we get into some old habits and we feel guilty.  However, we just need to recognize the situation and get back at it.  Am I disappointed at the number on the scale?  Yea, a little bit. I would be lying if I said otherwise.  However, I am determined to get back at it.

I miss not running every other day and going to the gym.  I feel myself getting lazy.  And for me....I REFUSE to be that way.  So look out!  I will be posting an update after 21 days.  Be prepared to be amazed!

If you are feeling discouraged and feeling like you have fell off the wagon, so to speak.  Just know that you are worth it.  You can do it.  Tomorrow is a new day and all you have to do is say what's done is done.  Nothing but moving forward now.....you got this. *fist bump*
