Race Review - Winter Night Trail Run

I enjoy trail runs.  I was looking forward to this one.

It was at night and cold.  I bundled up in four layers but was still freezing.  We went to the venue early due to parking and was glad we did.  We got prime parking.  Our running group had a tent sent up with a small heater.  While it was warmer, it wasn't that much warmer than the outside air.  But they had snacks and it was out of the wind so that was definitely a perk!

We hung around until race time.  We had our head lamps on, mud shoes laced and ready to roll.

I told Matt I would see him at the finish and was off.  There was the option of a quarter marathon (little over 6 miles), half marathon (13.1 miles) or full marathon (26.2 miles).  We only did the quarter.  The ground was varied terrain - pavement, mud, ice, water, stairs, bridges, roots, etc.  I did the first 3 miles feeling good.  They had a water/gatorade station that I took advantage of.  I made it to mile 4 okay.  Feeling a little more sluggish which, in turn, made me not lift my feet as high as I should.  And that created a scenario that I was trying to avoid - I fell.  Hard.

My foot hit a small stump and before I knew it, I was on the ground.  My left side landed on a tree root.  The lady behind me asked numerous times if I was alright.  To which I replied, I was fine and popped up.  I dusted off the mud and took off again.  It took me a few feet to realize I wasn't 'fine'.  Not only had the wind gotten knocked out of me but my left quad muscle was locked, my elbow was feeling pinched and my ribs hurt tremendously.  After a few more steps, I straightened my elbow and it popped back in place.  My ribs hurt with every breath and I thought they were broken or cracked.  My thigh though....it was the worst.  At mile 5, I stopped at the water station again (and they had some trail mix) and enjoyed a moment of just stopping and evaluating the situation.  Yup, still hurt.

At mile 6, I was running slow.  So slow, that I was wondering if I was moving at all.  I would run a bit, walk a bit, run a bit, walk a bit....or should I say limp?

My running watch was saying I was at 6.5 miles.....where was the stinking finish line?!?!

I came around a turn and there it was....I pushed and ran across the line and got stuck in the line to do another lap for the half - nooooo thank you!  I quickly rectified that predicament!

The snacks were fantastic - chips, pretzels, fruit, water, gatorade, hot chocolate, donuts.....Lordy!

There were only a couple people that were there from our group there already so I waited at the finish for the group that was walking (my husband being in the group).  I waited almost an hour and they crossed the line!

I was in so much pain that I could barely move.  The next day was worse but I realize my rips were merely bruised.  Not sure what is going on with the quad but as of today (2 days later), I am still sore but better.

The event was still fantastic.  It is was exhilarating and peaceful.  I love trail running and with this series we will do a summer run too and get a medal for doing both (3 medals for doing two races).

Despite the injuries and cold- it was a great time!

Race Review - Resolution Run 5K

New Year's Eve = double header!

We had just finished the Polar Dash 5k and headed 45 minutes away to the second race in downtown Indy.  We had to park in a parking garage, no biggie.  Then head over to the race area.  It was quite congested with runners!  My legs were already locking up, not wanting to really run again.  But we got our packets and headed to the start line.

After the count down, we were off....again!  The course was okay.  It was downtown Indianapolis so the scenery was less than desirable.  We ran past Lucas Oil Stadium then headed past some sub divisions and a few homeless people.  My legs were tired, no lie.  It wasn't the distance but the fact I ran 3 miles already then my legs had time to rest and tighten up.  However, I just kept pushing on.

I finally saw the finish and pushed towards it.  I had never felt so happy to cross a line than then.  haha.  I grabbed a water and a banana and waited for Matt and the rest of the group.

No real bells and whistles.  Typical 5k.  Started the year out with a bang!

So, the review of the event Resolution Run 5K:
Terrain - pavement, strictly road, sketchy in some areas as far as debris and environment
Organization - Organized fairly well, no concerns

Overall - it was okay, received a long sleeved shirt and a banana afterwards.
Award - none but proceeds went to Riley Children's Hospital
My Time 31.18

Race Review - Polar Dash

Nothing like starting the new year off right with a double header!

While post people were either asleep or nursing a hang over, we were up before the sun heading to our first race of the year.  It was cold but we have ran in colder.

We got there, got registered and then stayed in the warm van until it was close to time.  We met up with our running group and huddled to stay warm.  First the half marathoners were released at the sound of the cannon.  A few minutes later, we were released.  I took off, feeling good.  Actually, I felt pretty good the entire race.  It was strictly pavement.  I kept on trucking along.  I passed a small, tiny sign that said 5K with a curved arrow.  I thought to myself - was that the turn around?  I didn't want to seem stupid so I kept plugging along.  After about a block, I pulled over to the side and looked back.  Sure enough, other runners were turning around.  It was then that I realized I had ran too far.  Grrrrr.  So I turned around and picked up the pace a bit, frustrated that I ran too far.  However, to my defense, the sign was small and not very clear when you are running with watery eyes.

Matt and a couple others walked the 1.5 mile course.  As I jogged to the finish line, I saw them and pushed harder because I thought it would be funny to pass them since they did the shorter distance.  They passed over the finish a few seconds before me.  haha!

We got our medal and rushed off to head to the second race 45 minutes away.....

So, the review of the event Polar Dash:
Terrain - pavement, strictly road
Organization - Organized fairly well but the signs were small and not very noticeable, parking was limited and late comers had to park a distance away and walk to the start line
Cost - $25 per person
Time of Race - 8:00am
Overall - was okay, decent participation medal, shirts were nice (we didn't get one bc we registered late)
Award - participation medal
My Time 30.10
Race # - 1

Plugging along...
